Wood-framed garage wiped off slab, slams into two homes 250-feet away

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) — Last evening during a severe weather event some homes on the eastern side of Joplin sustained major damage. Specifically Greenwood Drive, 1 block east of 9th and Rex.

A young couple living on the dead end street let us know about the damage early Tuesday morning.

Pictures of destroyed roofs and one garage gone, like the roof and walls were just lifted off while the contents remained intact, we wanted to see for ourselves.

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN STORM HIT

A 1-story, wood-framed garage, was wiped from the concrete slab and most of it appeared to have landed onto two homes about 250-feet to the north.

“ The garage door is in there ,” from down street, the young man told us while looking at the massive debris pile that landed on one house and then was blown into the next.

The young lady adds, “We didn’t hear any sirens,” and then this huge noise. Breaking through their living room wall were roof trusses and other large pieces of wood.

Pink insulation was everywhere. “Our fish died, the fiberglass insulation got in the tank,” he said.

Family rushed to Joplin from Columbia, Mo. to assist packing up and moving out. The house is not livable. “Oddly our lease is almost up,” one stated.

There were no injuries. But not just on Greenwood Drive, but through the whole Joplin area all remained safe.
