JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – In April, Science Hill High School (SHHS) students participated in a reading challenge to see how many minutes they could accumulate that month. Now, in May, pages are still turning.

In April, students concluded the month with 130,666 minutes of reading, surpassing the 20,000 minutes goal Anne Timbs, SHHS library media specialist, set.

“It’s been really great to see the excitement about reading,” Timbs said. “I’ve had students coming into the library very excited about this challenge, and some of the students aren’t typical ones that make it a habit to stop by the library. The students have been eager to try and win the prizes. We really appreciate the Science Hill PTA for providing prizes.”

Kingsport will host ‘Family Fun Night’ on May 11

SHHS seniors read the most, followed by sophomores, freshmen, and juniors. Kayleigh Stocton, Elena Pieski, and Rylei Foster were the top three readers in the entire contest, and they were awarded gift cards.

“Reading is something that benefits you no matter what you do,” Timbs said. “The more you read, the more you learn, so it’s great to see students so excited about reading.”

Timbs said some students may compete in the Toppers Reading Cup next year.
