Eye on the Scene: The Volcanos Play at Light Club Lamp Shop
Saturday, January 17: If my grim reaper came in the form of the last good show I saw, death by Burlington band the Volcanos wouldn’t be an awful way to go. With a sound the band describes as Jimi Hendrix meets Elliott Smith, the songs build up until exploding from the dual tube amps of guitarists Rob Voland and Tyler George-Minetti. The Volcanos’ emotive vocals and melancholic meanderings reveal a heavy Smith influence, and Voland’s wah pedal work alone could explain the nod to Hendrix. But while both Voland and George-Minetti are accomplished and capable guitarists, their jams flow less like Eddie Van Halen’s “Eruption” and more like Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer.” Like lava, the Volcanos’ songs darken quickly when they hit the cool air, their power hiding below the surface, slowly rolling over an awestruck crowd.

'Great Gatsby'-like Burlington bar shutters downtown
A longtime bar in downtown Burlington has had its last call. “We have made the difficult decision to close Drink Bar effective immediately,” the St. Paul Street bar’s owners wrote in a Jan. 22 Instagram post . “Thank you to all our former and current employees, patrons, friends, family, and community. The journey was incredible and the people truly made the place special.” Drink served wine, beer and small plates of food but emphasized cocktails. The Burlington Free Press wrote in 2020 about the bar’s renovation. The changes, according to the article, took on “the casual elegance of the Jazz Age, with classic crooners singing on the sound system and Art Deco-ish lights suspended over the nearly 45-foot-long, black-granite bar and black-and-white-tiled floor.” Head bartending and marketing manager Matthew Doyle said back then that the space was “very ‘Great Gatsby’-ish” but still approachable. “We don’t want it to be intimidating,” he said. “This isn’t the Ritz.” The Drink space sits near the corner of St. Paul and Main streets that has seen significant disruption the past couple of years from street-reconstruction work in the city. Drink joins The Gryphon restaurant and Katharine Montstream’s art gallery among businesses that have recently
