Crowds turn out early for festival opening
Good weather, heritage and community kicked off the Autumn Leaves Festival’s Opening Ceremony Friday in honor of the festival’s 60th anniversary. Spectators gathered around the bandstand and dancing stage with folding chairs in anticipation of the starting event. The ceremony began at 11:30 a.m. and was held at the WPAQ Bandstand. The station’s music director, Tim Frye, made the opening remarks before turning the microphone over to Sylvia Lowry, local retired music educator who asked the crowd to join her in singing the National Anthem. Mayor John Cawley took to the stage to read from the festival’s proclamation. “The city of Mount Airy recognizes those who have established this beloved tradition, those who have sustained it through the decades and celebrate with generations of families and visitors who have made the festival a part of their lives,” he read. Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ashly Lancaster spoke on stage and thanked WPAQ and the multiple sponsors of the festival, saying preparation for the festival did not happen in isolation and relied on support from many to execute. “It takes a village and about 12 hours of manpower to transfer downtown Mount Airy into the Autumn Leaves
