Snow or no? George Flickinger gives his Virginia Winter Weather Outlook

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Trying to predict an entire winter is a little like guessing the weather months in advance — there’s no sure thing. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Forecast models are hinting at the first mountain snow of the season for the southern and central Appalachians next Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14. This is early pattern spotting, and nothing is set in stone yet. The timing lines up with when the region usually sees its first northwest flow snow event. WDBJ7 offers First Alert 2026 winter predictions

Before we dive into the future, lets first look at the past. The winter of 2025-2026 featured near normal snowfall in the Roanoke Valley, New River Valley and Lynchburg, above normal snowfall in the southside and below normal snowfall for portions of the Allegheny Highlands. Most notably was the snow and sleet storm in late January that caused significant impacts on travel and power, as cold weather remained locked in place well after the winter storm ended. Despite alternating periods of cold and mild spells the winter as a whole was near average in terms of temperature.
