JANESVILLE, Wis. -- New information has been released into the investigation of the armed person who died after being shot by a Janesville Police officer on March 1.
Preliminary autopsy results showed Andrew J. Zigler, 52, of Janesville, died from firearm-related trauma.
According to a release from the Rock County Office of District Attorney, Janesville Police officers were dispatched to a home on North Parker Drive, just before 10 p.m. March 1.
On arrival, officers attempted to contact Zigler, after learning the suspect was seen waving a gun and pointing it at two older adults.
Family members told one officer that Zigler was asking for money from the victims, and was upset that no one was helping him financially.
According to the release, officers made contact with Zigler, who was reported to have mental health issues, and had been suicidal in the past.
Zigler's behavior became more erratic, as officers learned more of his situation: Zigler had become unemployed, and was depressed. Earlier in the evening of March 1, Zigler began threatening the victims with the loaded gun. Officers told Zigler that help was available, but Zigler did not want any help.
Officers then entered the home, after seeing Zigler waiving the gun at the victims. One officer, armed with a rifle, ultimately shot Zigler, after police said the suspect was continuing to be agitated, and threatening the victims. Zigler was pronounced dead at the home by paramedics.
The Rock County District Attorney, based on the DCI report, declined to pursue charges against the officers, based on the investigation evidence that they acted appropriately.
No officers were hurt.
