Sexton honored with ‘Book of Golden Deeds’
Wasecan Tom Sexton says he is grateful and flattered that the Waseca Area Exchange Club honored him with its annual “Book of Golden Deeds” award this past January. Among other accomplishments, the award acknowledges his work planning and coordinating Waseca’s 2023 LakeFest celebration, so before saying anything else, he made it clear the summer festival came about because of contributions and input from many community members. Sexton is enthusiastic about attributing the success of last year’s event to the personalities, skills and resources contributed by others.
Titans explode for 11 runs in 7th to defeat Waseca 20-1
The Tri-City United softball team traveled to Waseca Thursday night to take on the Bluejays in a preview of a future Big South Conference matchup. The offense for the Titans scored five runs through the first four innings before exploding for 15 more runs in the final three innings to defeat the Bluejays 20-1. JWP track and field sees girls cap off historic week with Gopher Conference Championship
After the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton girls track and field team started the week by securing a spot in the Class A True Team state championships by finishing first in the section, the Bulldogs returned to action Saturday at Maple River H.S. to compete in the Gopher Conference Championships. The girls added to their incredible season by claiming the conference title , defeating second-place finisher NRHEG by 30.5 points, while the boys finished second, just 19 points behind Maple River. ...

After 73 years and a long fight with the Army, a Korean War veteran from Minnesota who was wounded in combat finally got his Purple Heart. (AP) — After 73 years and a long fight with the U.S. Army, a Korean War veteran from Minnesota who was wounded in combat finally got his Purple Heart medal on Friday. The Army notified Earl Meyer, 96, of St. Peter, last month that it had granted him a Purple Heart, which honors service members wounded or killed in combat. Meyer, who still has shrapnel in his thigh that continues to cause him occasional pain, had the medal pinned to his chest at a ceremony at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. Afterward, Meyer recalled being at an earlier ceremony for veterans when Purple Heart honorees were asked to rise so they could be honored. Now, said Meyer, “I can stand up with them guys.”

Before rain moves in by Wednesday, we will spend today with pleasant conditions. We are looking at plentiful sunshine despite some haze above our heads to to lingering wildfire smoke. The good news is, air quality here at the surface should remain good to moderate. This means only those who are extra sensitive to smoke/wildfire smoke should limit their time outside. Those that aren’t extra sensitive can go about their day as normal. This afternoon will be beautiful with a light breeze up to 15 mph and highs hovering in the mid-70s. Tonight will become partly cloudy as temperatures dip into the upper-40s and low-50s by Wednesday morning.
Waseca area caregivers receive grant
Last month (January) the Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging, Inc. (MNRAAA) has awarded Waseca Area Caregiver Services (WACS) a $61,926 Title III E grant and a $81,928 Title B grant. The awards are funded under Title III of the Older Americans Act (OAA) and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
