Mankato Residents Escape Unharmed as Firefighters Extinguish Basement Blaze on James Avenue
Flames engulfed a basement in Mankato's quiet residential stretch Tuesday afternoon, with the city's Department of Public Safety racing to the scene after panicked calls from residents. At 748 James Avenue, two occupants detected the acrid scent of smoke billowing from their basement, their quick thinking in alerting authorities may have saved lives. As reported on the department's official Facebook page, the blaze broke out at 12:34 p.m., prompting an immediate evacuation of the duplex apartment, all occupants made it out unharmed before firefighters arrived to confront the inferno.
TIF hearing set for $1.6 million project
The Waseca City Council set a public hearing at a date to be determined on the proposed establishment and adoption of a “tax increment financing” (TIF) plan for an intended project on the “marketplace” property--the area of land east of the intermediate school and between the junior/senior high school and Walmart. The Waseca Real Estate Fund is looking to construct a 36-unit residential family housing development on the western half of the site. Sonnenberg said the project would not move forward without the reduction in property taxes offered through the TIF financing.
