PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Detectives with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a suspicious death after skeletal remains were discovered in a remote, wooded area of Southern Oregon on April 14.

The sheriff’s office has not disclosed the exact location of the investigation. However, the remains were said to be found somewhere near Applegate, 15 miles west of Jacksonville.

“The rugged terrain and remote area required JCSO Search and Rescue to assist in recovering the remains,” the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said. “Due to the ongoing investigation, the exact location will not be released at this time.”

Investigators are still working to identify the victim and their cause of death. A Facebook post about the investigation shared by the JCSO has a number of Southern Oregon residents chattering about possible connections to some of the region’s many cold cases. However, the JCSO has not revealed any additional evidence at this time.

“Due to the advanced stages of decomposition, state medical examiners will conduct additional testing,” the JCSO. “This case is under further investigation with detectives following additional leads.”
