2+ FEET: Massive Overnight Totals in the Tetons

    By Powderchasers,

    2024-03-02

Jackson Hole just picked up 30-35 inches of snow in the last 24 hours (the deepest report we've ever seen here). Jackson Hole is keeping the upper mountain closed today (Saturday) with just a few possible lift openings on the lower mountain. This ties a JHMR record from 1988 (overnight snow) but that storm was prior to the resort opening for the season. This would make it the deepest overnight dump in history while the resort was operating.

Grand Targhee reported 22", but it looks like the actual total could be a little higher. Targhee is closed today.

The Tetons are sitting under a firehose of moisture streaming from the southwest. This moisture is the downstream remnants of the atmospheric river that's currently hammering California and is expected to drop 5-8 FEET this weekend in the Sierra.

The cold front from this system is currently approaching the region and will bring a final hurrah of strong snowfall before the post-frontal cold temperatures set in:

Cold frontal passage this morning reached the Tetons at 11AM and will reach the Utah mountains by noon. Intense snowfall bands will accompany the front.

Light snow is expected to continue to fall in the region on Saturday afternoon into the evening. Avalanche Danger in the Tetons is rated high above 7500 feet. .
