ZACHARY, La. (WAFB) - An Amazon delivery van caught fire Monday, June 5, in a Zachary neighborhood. It happened at around 1:30 p.m. near Loudon Street near Rollins Road. According to Zachary Fire Chief Danny Kimble, the Amazon employee stopped to drop off some packages at a residence, then while he was on his way back to the van, he noticed the huge flames and smoke.

NORWOOD - Law enforcement is investigating a UTV crash that left one person dead and two others injured Saturday afternoon. According to the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office, the crash happened Saturday night around 8:30 p.m. in Norwood. The UTV reportedly overturned between Highway 19 and nearby railroad tracks, killing one person and injuring two others.
License plate reader helps lead to arrest of man, seizure of stolen vehicle in Central
CENTRAL, La. (BRPROUD) – A license plate reader helped lead to the discovery and seizure of a stolen vehicle and arrest of Stephen Jackson, 28, of Baker. Prior to the arrest, a member of the Central Police Department “received a flock camera notification of a stolen vehicle,” according to the affidavit. The vehicle was a Toyota Camry and it was located a little before 4 p.m. in the 9600 block of Hooper Road.

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A female black rhino at the Baton Rouge Zoo named Gemstone had died from age-related complications. According to a news release from the zoo, the San Francisco Zoo owned her, and she came via in 2006 from the Center for Conservation of Tropical Ungulates in Pease River, Florida. She was on loan as a breeding transfer.

The Zachary Advocate & Plainsman has set the deadline to receive local candidates’ announcements for the Oct. 14 election. Candidates running in parish races can submit a campaign announcement by Aug. 1. All announcements must include age, political party and education of candidate and the announcement must be 450 words or less. A color photo of only the candidate can be sent with announcement.

After two tumultuous years, East Baton Rouge's chief public defender has been ousted, leaving one of Louisiana's largest court systems without a key leader. Last week, state public defender leaders declined to renew a one-year contract for Lisa Parker, the embattled chief who has headed the East Baton Rouge Office of the Public Defender since July 2021. She was appointed to the job after Michael Mitchell, her predecessor, departed the office following decades at the helm.
