During the Monday, April 22 meeting, Mike Edgin with accounting firm Edgin, Parkman, Fleming & Fleming, said the city received positive financial growth over the last year. In the city’s general fund there is a balance of $1,767,000 or roughly 5.4 months of the budget. Edgin said anywhere between three to six months is “healthy.” Edgin praised the city for working with a third-party agency on collecting fines, with the number of outstanding tickets dropping from 86 to 43 over the past year. Aldermen also approved the use of Clark Adamson for insurance broker services for health and ancillary insurance. Smith said finding a broker who would provide customer serviceisparamount. “We were running into issues with employees not sure on who to talk to or call if they had any questions concerning their health insurance,” Smith said. The cost for having the broker will be $20,000. Smith said he hopes to lower the cost per year by entering into a longterm contract with an exit clause, if the city is not satisfied. The city also said goodbye to Water Department Supervisor Robert Tomison after nearly 18 years. Smith said he began “working in a ditch” with a shovel and moved his way up. “It’s been a adventure,” Tomison said. “I’m blessed to have the opportunity to work for the city.”
