JISD approves 24-25 calendar Brian Smith Wed, 03/27/2024 - 8:50 am Board members approved the Jacksboro ISD calendar for 2024-25 during the Monday, March 18 meeting. JISD Assistant Superintendent Sara Mathis told the board the District Improvement Committee approved the calendar unanimously. She said the calendar is very similar to last year. School will start Wednesday, Aug. 21. Mathis said with two-a-day workouts for summer not starting until Monday, Aug. 5 and make the start of school easier for everyone. Teachers will return Monday, Aug. 12. Mathis said the schedule will remain the same with a week off for Thanksgiving and three weeks off for Christmas, which has been very popular with both teachers and parents. Mathis said the district has banked its normal five days of minutes in case of bad weather or other issue. JISD Superintendent Brad Burnett said to accommodate school ending before Memorial Day, the first bell will ring at 7:45 a.m. “We have the extended breaks everyone likes but to get that, we had to trade off somewhere,” Burnett said. Burnett also announced the district is considering changing grading periods from six to nine weeks. He said many schools in Region 9 have implemented the change which can make things easier for teachers, particularly in the younger elementary grades. In other news, the board approved keeping the accounting firm of Edgin, Parkman, Fleming & Fleming PC to conduct the district’s annual audit. Burnett said the firm always does a very through job and agreed to push the district’s final audit back to October. In his report, work continues at the high school gym with basketball goals and new permanent chair back seating having been installed, Burnett said the floor will be put in during the first week of April. He also said much of the painting has been done. He said things are moving along slower than he would like but said not having enough labor has slowed the process. Jacksboro High School Principal Starla Sanders said the Tiger logo has been installed in the front of the school. It has a backlit sign in purple and several people commented on how good it looks, Sanders said. The district announced having a special meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday, March 28 at the JISD Administration Building, to reveal the guaranteed maximum price and the contractor for the bond issue construction.
