Red Oak council backs final reading of ordinance updating building code, permit structure
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak officials have finalized an updated building permit and fee structure. At its regular meeting earlier this week, the Red Oak City Council unanimously approved the final reading of an ordinance amendment regarding the city's building codes and building permits, primarily combining the two topics into one chapter, setting a penalty of doubling a permit fee if work began on a "permit-required" project before getting a permit, and updates references from the 2015 to the 2025 International Building Codes. By a 3-2 vote, the council also approved an amended resolution setting the permit fee schedule and outlining the types of projects exempt from permits. Much of the discussion centered on whether to require a permit for replacing roof coverings, such as shingles, when the roof structure is not modified. Councilman Terry Koppa had suggested the amendment, which would require a permit for replacing shingles only on an inhabited structure.
