Pittsburgh local music spotlight: Bealtaine
The Pittsburgh Celtic folk band Bealtaine was more than happy to lend its support to the second annual Benefit Against Imperialism on Feb. 28. “We aren’t always extremely vocal about the politics from the stage, but it’s all there in the lyrics to many of the songs we play. Folks know some of the rebel songs but tend not to dig any deeper into their meaning and history,” multi-instrumentalist George White said. “And sadly, Irish-Americans have a not-so-great history of kicking the ladder away and not standing with other historically oppressed peoples. Plenty of people like to talk about the struggles that Irish immigrants had when coming to America, but then they’ll immediately turn a blind eye to more recent immigrant groups facing similar treatment and worse.

Pittsburgh Musical Theater’s ‘Annie’ brings a shining cast to a classic musical
Some artistic works are both timeless and very much of their time. That’s the case with “Annie,” a massive hit musical that was already a cultural touchstone before it even existed. Drawing from more than half a century of source material in the form of comics, radio programs and movies, the 1976 show itself is one of the most-produced musicals in the modern canon — so much so that it has the distinction of being the first show with two productions to get reviews from me.
