PHILLIPS — A Park Falls man was sentenced to 11 years prison followed by extended supervision for a 2020 crash that killed a Jefferson County motorcyclist and injured his wife in the town of Lake. Man pleads guilty to obstruction
A Ladysmith man accused of resisting or obstructing an officer after his brother allegedly led a Rice Lake police officer on a high-speed chase through the city pleaded guilty to the charge on Thursday in Barron County Circuit Court. Jacob J. Shimko, 38, appeared before Judge J.M. Bitney and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor resisting or obstructing an officer. Two felony counts of bail jumping were dismissed but read into the record. Bitney ordered Shimko to pay court costs and he was given 60 days to pay or set up a payment plan. An arrest warrant had been ordered for Shimko as he had not appeared on May 8 as scheduled. It was never issued as the defendant appeared in court the next day.
Jump River museum to open
The Jump River Valley Historical Society has announced its summer museum opening schedule. The museum will open for the season on June 8 to coincide with the 57th Lumberman’s Day festival in Catawba. The museum is scheduled to be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, which are June 8 and 22, July 13 and 27, and Aug. 10 and 24. Check out the 2025 display, “Thanks For the Memories!” at the museum located at W9224 U.S. 8 in Catawba. Gottwald not running
Price County Clerk Jean Gottwald is not running for reelection in November. Her term will end on Jan. 6, 2025. Gottwald filed a noncandidacy notification on April 30. The deadline to file noncandidacy is May 24 in order to not appear on the Nov. 5 election ballot. The filing deadline to register as a candidate for county clerk is June 3, according to Gottwald. County W to undergo ditching on Tuesday
The Price County Highway Department will begin ditching at various locations on County Highway W on Tuesday, May 14, according to a press release. The work will start at Birch Hill Road, and end 12 miles west at Forest Lane in the town of Elk. County Highway W will be reduced to one lane in the work zone from 6:30 a.m. until the work is completed, which is estimated to be around 3:30 p.m.

PHILLIPS — The city of Phillips Committee of the Whole approved the purchase of a new fire truck at its May 7 meeting. The total purchase price of the truck, to include the chassis, all equipment and other preparation is approximately $779,000, according to Phillips City Clerk Shelby Kosmer.
