Giddy up: Horseback riding around Indianapolis
11 days ago
Say hello to summer’s mane event: Horseback riding. If you’re itching to giddy up without heading too far into the country, we’ve got a roundup of local horseback riding opportunities that will make you say yee-haw.
Trail rides at this ranch are available in 30 or 60 minute segments. Excursions run all year, with the exception of holidays and bad weather — just make sure you make a reservation in advance. If you really love your experience and want to spend more time on horseback, you can also sign up for riding lessons.
You’ve probably heard of Koteewi Park’s legendary tubing hill — but did you know the park also has a public trail riding stable? Horseback riding here is more than just a fun experience. The stable is managed by Ben’s Ranch Foundation, which aims to improve the lives of teens struggling with mental health issues by connecting them with part-time jobs and small group programs at farms, stables, and other natural settings. The group offers five different experiences for you to choose from.
Five of Indiana’s State Parks contain saddle barns: Fort Harrison, Brown County, McCormick’s Creek (closed for the 2024 season due to tornado recovery efforts), Pokagon, and Turkey Run. Each saddle barn is operated by an independent contractor, so dates + hours, prices, and ride offerings vary between locations — call ahead to verify details.
Looking for pony experiences for a younger crowd? This family-owned and operated farm in Sheridan offers party packages, lessons, and summer camps, where kids can learn to ride and groom ponies. Sign your kid up .
This center offers riding lessons for both kids and adults. If you’re not quite ready to commit you can sign up for a family horse experience instead, during which you can meet and groom a horse, learn about them, and have a leadline ride.
