Johnson County voters led a ‘blue wave' in Kansas, further shifting to the left

Just 10 years ago, Donald Trump headlined a Republican sweep of the federal offices on the ballot in Johnson County. Since then, the suburban Kansas City county’s electorate has continued a yearslong trend of turning the previously purple county solidly blue. As a nationwide “blue wave” led to a hugely successful midterm election for Democratic candidates, Johnson County’s voters spearheaded the shift to the left in Kansas. Along with historically Democratic Wyandotte County, the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro has cemented itself as the political party’s stronghold in Kansas. An easy answer for the ongoing shift would be Republican President Donald Trump’s unpopularity, high gas prices and a war with Iran. But Deann Mitchell, chair for the Johnson County Democratic Party, said years of strategizing campaigns and recruiting pragmatic leaders to represent the party led to the historic election night. “It’s been 10 years of continuous work to turn Johnson County blue,” Mitchell said. At the forefront of the county’s Democratic push was wide support for Leawood pastor Adam Hamilton, who received more votes in the county than any candidate — even more than five-time elected Democratic U.S. Rep. Ingle beats Patterson in Lee's Summit, breaking Missouri GOP Senate supermajority

Rep. Keri Ingle defeated House Speaker Jon Patterson in a hotly contested Lee’s Summit state Senate race, helping Democrats to break the Republican supermajority in Jefferson City. With all precincts votes tallied in preliminary results, Ingle led with 55% of the vote. “Thank you to everyone who helped with this campaign and everyone who trusted me with their vote,” Ingle said. “I know people put a lot of time into this. I’m grateful they were willing to do that for me.” The race attracted significant attention and was heavily funded for a state Senate race. It was one of two Missouri Senate districts in this year’s elections that were considered to be close enough to flip . The district is currently represented by Sen. Johnson County electing 11 new Democrat lawmakers ends a Republican supermajority

Johnson County voters could send nearly a dozen new Democratic lawmakers to the Kansas House, helping reshape the Legislature and break up a Republican supermajority. Kansas Democrats needed to gain five seats in the House to end the Republican stranglehold on the chamber. They gained those seats and much more in Johnson County. The tidal wave of votes for Democratic candidates in the suburban Kansas City county drove a historic night for the political party, which saw its first candidate elected to the U.S. Senate in nearly a century. The county’s voters flipped 11 of the 20 state legislative seats expected to switch from Republican to Democratic control once vote totals are finalized. Democrats are now expected to hold 25 of the county’s 27 seats in the Kansas House. Several of those races came down to the wire and may not be fully decided until all mail ballots are counted this week. But the outcome shows that Johnson County’s voters practically single-handedly ended the Republican supermajority. The walloping of Republican candidates reflected a motivated electorate. Could Rod Blagojevich help get Phil LeVota's bribery charges dismissed?

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has emerged as an unlikely legal lifeline for indicted Jackson County Executive Phil LeVota. Well, the case law from his own corruption prosecution has, anyway. Blagojevich, you may recall, was sentenced in 2011 to 14 years in prison on corruption charges after trying to cash in on his power to appoint a replacement for Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate. In 2015, a federal appeals court overturned several of Blagojevich’s convictions, ruling that exchanging one government appointment for another was a form of political bargaining, not criminal bribery. (Donald Trump, on whose show “Celebrity Apprentice” Blagojevich once appeared, commuted Blagojevich’s sentence in 2020 and granted him a full pardon in 2025.) Now LeVota is invoking that appeals court decision in an attempt to get most of the federal charges against him thrown out. In a motion filed Oct. 9, LeVota’s attorney J.R. Hobbs argues that the conduct described in LeVota’s indictment amounts to ordinary political horse-trading, or what he calls “political logrolling, not bribery.” “What the indictment charges,” Hobbs writes, “is the everyday trading of political acts that American law has never treated as a federal crime.” LeVota faces five federal charges stemming from allegations
