Prospective jurors in Union, Wallowa counties will now receive postcard with instructions on how to access new online portal
LA GRANDE — Jury summons in Union and Wallowa circuit courts will look a little different moving forward. The courts are now mailing out postcards to prospective jurors with instructions for accessing online information and resources, according to Michelle Leonard, trial court administrator for Union and Wallowa counties. The postcards are part of a new statewide system that aims to streamline jury service service response and make communication easier.
Adams Avenue closed June 15 for Touch a Truck
LA GRANDE — Adams Avenue will be closed to traffic on June 15 for the second annual Touch a Truck event, according to a social media post by the La Grande Police Department. The closure will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will span from Fourth to Greenwood streets. The event is sponsored by La Grande Parks and Recreation and runs from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Honors: Two Imbler students awarded Wheat Foundation scholarships
IMBLER — The Oregon Wheat Foundation announced the recipients of its 2024 scholarships. Two of the 12 graduating seniors are Imbler High School students: Jake Bingaman and Kale Bingaman. Each student will receive $2,000 “in support of their higher education endeavors.”
Two historic Eastern Oregon cemeteries awarded project grants from Oregon Parks and Rec
EASTERN OREGON – The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department recently announced that 11 historic cemeteries across Oregon will receive a combined total of $60,566 in grants for various projects from the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries (OCHC). Among these cemeteries, the Blue Mountain Kees Cemetery in Weston, Umatilla County, will receive $2,000 and a match of $1,500 for ground penetrating radar interpretation and organizational structuring. In addition, the North Powder Cemetery in Union County will receive $2,500 and a match of $1,900 for a complete land survey. In the announcements for the grants, Oregon Parks and Rec wrote:
Lost mushroom picker located near Pilcher Creek Reservoir
LA GRANDE — A 72-year-old mushroom picker was found about 80 minutes after he had been reported missing about 5 miles from of Pilcher Creek Reservoir on Wednesday, May 29. The man, who did not need medical treatment, was found at about 2:20 p.m. shortly after a Union County Sheriff's Office sergeant arrived ahead of a Union County Search and Rescue party. The deputy told the friend to go back to where he had last seen the man in case he found his way out of the woods. About five minutes later the man emerged from the woods, according to Union County Emergency Manager Nick Vora.

La Grande Police Department reminds youth, guardians about curfew laws following increase in juvenile criminal activity
LA GRANDE — As summer approaches, the La Grande Police Department wants to remind minors and their guardians about curfew laws. The police department and Union County Juvenile Department have seen an increase in juvenile criminal activities, which have mainly occurred late at night, according to a press release from Lt. Jason Hays. He said that over the last six months to a year there have been more incidents of damaged property, shoplifting, fighting and alcohol use. These crimes are usually associated with higher risk minors.
