Central Section football playoffs: SJM wins thriller; Madera RB runs wild in win
While No. 4 seed Kingsburg handled business in Division II with a 47-13 victory over No. 13 Golden West, the division’s other playoff games provided plenty of drama. No. 12 San Joaquin Memorial rallied from a 21-7 halftime deficit to stun No. 5 Central Valley Christian 33-28. Jayden Jenkins scored on a 3-yard run with 25 seconds remaining to cap the comeback and give the Panthers the victory. The fourth quarter featured plenty of back-and-forth action. CVC scored a touchdown to take a 28-27 lead before Jenkins delivered the game-winning score. In another Division II thriller, No. 9 Centennial edged No. 8 Lemoore 17-16, converting a two-point attempt to escape with the victory. Division III: Madera wins shootout It was a memorable week for Darius Smith. First, the Madera standout received his first Division I scholarship offer from Sam Houston State. Then he delivered a performance to remember Friday night. Smith accounted for five touchdowns — four rushing and one receiving — to lead the No. 11-seeded Coyotes to a wild 59-48 victory over No. 6 Templeton. “He is one of the most dynamic playmakers in the Valley,” Madera coach Kenneth Paolinelli said. “Super, great humble kid. Great teammate who

Former Central East linebacker making his mark on the Fresno City College defense
Former Central East standout linebacker Aiden Chavez has developed into a coach on the field. From his days playing under Kyle Biggs through the end of the Tony Caviglia era, Chavez has learned from some of the best coaches in the area. Those experiences have helped shape him into a consistent tackler for the Fresno City College football team. Chavez has recorded 43 tackles, including five tackles for loss, and two sacks this season. The Bee caught up with Chavez to discuss last week’s loss to College of the Sequoias, what the team learned from the setback and how he has continued to develop as a player. Question: What was the biggest thing that went wrong against COS, and what did the film tell you afterward? Aiden Chavez : The biggest thing that went wrong against COS was how we practiced and how lackadaisical we were on game day. The film afterwards told us that we can’t just show up and play and expect to win after a bad week of practice and not be locked in on game day. Q: Was there a particular moment in that game when you felt the momentum shift? AC: I felt that from

Derek Carr impressed with Fresno State QB Jayden Mandal's growth after tough start
Former Fresno State and Las Vegas Raiders star Derek Carr likes what he has seen from Bulldogs quarterback Jayden Mandal, who has continued to improve after a difficult season opener against USC. Mandal delivered his best performance as Fresno State’s starting quarterback against Oregon State on Oct. 31, throwing for 202 yards and two touchdowns while adding 34 yards and two scores on the ground in the Bulldogs’ 38-22 victory at Valley Children’s Stadium. “I just think it’s awesome that the kid from the Valley is playing quarterback for our home team,” Carr said. “We all want, in this day and age, greatness to happen immediately. He had a tough game against USC, and (people) think the world’s over. The world’s not over. That’s a good football team, and in his first start, he’s shown improvement since.” Fresno State coach Matt Entz has continued to show confidence in Mandal, a former Buchanan High standout, sticking with him through the challenges of his first season as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback. Mandal has responded by putting together increasingly productive performances. He has thrown for 1,595 yards and 10 touchdowns with just two interceptions. Entz also appreciates Mandal’s ability to make plays with

As the popular saying goes, “all good things must come to an end,” which is especially true for the Selma High School girls’ tennis team as their season is officially over. All the girls’ hard work has paid off tremendously, and they have done an excellent job representing Selma High School, qualifying for the TCC Championships.
