Marine Corps League sets 251st birthday ball in Jersey Shore
Jersey Shore, Pa. — The Williamsport Detachment #388 of the Marine Corps League will hold its annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball Friday, Nov. 6, in Jersey Shore. This year’s ball marks the 251st birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps and will also recognize the nation’s 250th anniversary, according to the detachment. The event is set to take place at Bald Birds Brewing Company, 220 Shaffer Lane, from 5 to 10 p.m. Retired Master Sgt. Robert Mosley, USMC, will be the guest speaker. Entertainment will be by guest singers Kooper and Kash, featuring former Tiadaghton Queen Ava Musser. The evening will include catered dining, the reading of Gen. John A. Lejeune’s 1921 birthday message and the traditional cake cutting, in which the first pieces go to the guest of honor and the oldest and youngest Marines present. The Marine Corps traces its birthday to Nov. 10, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, passed a resolution establishing two battalions of Continental Marines. The first Marines were enlisted at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. “We invite our members, local veterans, military families and community supporters to join us for an unforgettable evening,” a representative for the detachment said.
