HUMBOLDT HISTORY: Back Before They Knew Any Better, Some Early White Settlers Thought They Could Build With Brick. So Some Became Brick-Makers
The manufacturing of bricks was an established industry in Humboldt County from the year 1855, as a growing need for them developed to supply the construction trade. It was expensive to order the heavy product shipped to the North Coast, so local means of production was sought. It was found that clay of good quality was in abundance throughout Humboldt County.

‘Humboldt’s Electric Future Workshop’: Redwood Coast Energy Authority

Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA), public power provider for approximately 92% of Humboldt County’s eligible homes and businesses, will hold two public workshops titled ‘Humboldt’s Electric Future’ to gather public input for important decisions. The first will be in-person-only on Monday, June 5 at the Jefferson Community Center, 1000 B St in Eureka. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., with workshop activities from 6 to 8 p.m. The second workshop will be online via zoom, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 8.
This Sweet Sniffer Needs a Lap to Love
This three-year-old sweet sniffer, Rylee, at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter is looking for a home. According to the Humboldt County Animal Shelter Facebook page, “She makes beautiful eye contact and will sit in your lap for pets if you let her. In the play yard she is on a mission to sniff out all the smells while intermittently coming in for pets and discussions about how she is such a sweet girl. She is absolutely adorable!”
VIDEO: HCSO releases video from April deputy-involved shooting
The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office has released video of a deputy-involved shooting in April that left the two suspects injured. According to the Eureka Police Department, on April 18, their communication center received a call of a person being beaten in the parking lot of the Bayshore Mall. EPD said by the time officers responded the suspects fled the scene in a red pickup truck.
OBITUARY: Eric Douglas (‘Rick’) Tyson, 1959-2023
Rick passed away on April 20, 2023 at his home in Carlotta. Rick had early onset vascular dementia that progressed rapidly. Rick was born January 4, 1959 in Fountain Hill (near Allentown), Pennsylvania. Rick grew up in a large family. He had six brothers and one sister. He had fond memories about the historic home he grew up in that was built solid, of stone. He always spoke fondly of how his father could fix anything. Rick was proud of his father, Jesse Tyson, who served as a pilot in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. Rick’s father was deployed to England in March 1944. He flew a B26 FLYING Marauder until the end of the war. Rick respected the fact that his father would not speak of the horrible nature of war. He adored his mother, Phyllis Tyson, whom he loved dearly. She provided a loving home for their large family.
