Texas Southern extends championship coach

Johnny Jones has been a model of consistency during his six year tenure as men’s basketball coach at Texas Southern University. Tiger fans will have to get use seeing a little more of him on the sidelines, TSU signed him to a three year extension on Friday. The extension will keep Jones as head coach of the Tigers through the 2029 season.

Since arriving at TSU in 2018, the Tigers have made it to postseason play for five consecutive tournaments, three to the NCAA and two to the CIT. The Tigers have five postseason wins in that span. Texas Southern has made it to five consecutive SWAC Tournament Championship games under Johnny Jones.

Jones won his 100th game at Texas Southern this past February, and captured his 400th overall win in March. In 2024, Jones also served as a co-head coach of Team Ben Wallace in the third annual HBCU All-Star Game in Phoenix, Ariz.

“Coach Jones has done an outstanding job in maintaining and enhancing the tradition of the men’s basketball program at TSU,” said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. “Since arriving at TSU six years ago, the college basketball landscape has evolved quickly, and Coach Jones has successfully navigated TSU through these changes both on-and-off the court and has us well-positioned to remain as one of the top programs in the SWAC and region.”

Staff changes

Jones will be moving forward into the next season without one of his top assistants. Stacy Hollowell, an assistant who came to TSU having led Loyola University of New Orleans to a championship, has left. Hollowell was named the head coach at the University of New Orleans on Thursday.

Jones was happy to see his now former assistant move back into the head coach’s seat.

“The neighborhood kid across the street who I drove to our basketball camps in the eighties. I have followed his career path with great interest and pride. He has succeeded at every level. His national title at Loyola speaks for itself. Stacy has taken no short cuts to get to his dream job. He is ready for this, and I look forward to watching UNO’s future success,” said Jones.
