A Houston Texas mother is being accused of leaving her two kids at home alone for almost a week while she vacationed on a cruise, according to @khou11.
29-year-old Lakesha Woods Williams alleges to giving her cousin money to watch the kids while she was away but he allegedly ran off with the money and left the children alone. Since the incident, Williams has been charged with child abandonment with intent to return after leaving the 6 and 8-year-old children home alone for nearly a week, according to court records. Witnesses close to the situation contacted authorities when they noticed the kids were home alone so police officer did a welfare check on April 9 to investigate the situation.
Witnesses told authorities that they seen Williams leave the home on April 4 with luggage. They also added that this isn’t the first time that something like this has occurred. “You left your child unattended for four days. Let’s say you leave the country out on a trip, and the cousin doesn’t go to take care of the children. If this is really a plane flight like she says it is, wouldn’t you as a parent be on the first plane back immediately?” Assistant District Attorney Keegan Childers asked.
Once officers found the children, boy and girl, inside the apartment they described the scene as being in a “disarray.” The court records show that officers stated food was all over the apartment and the inside smelled like urine. The children allegedly told officers that their mother left for a cruise and they weren’t sure when she would be returning.
More shocking details about the situation is that the officers located a camera inside the apartment where they say Williams would talk to the kids through the camera and one of the children also had a cell phone where he would text the mother while she was away.
The Houston Fire Department was called to make sure the children were not injured or malnourished. Child Protective Services was also called. The children were released to the custody of their aunt, according to court records.
Williams’ defense attorney said she paid her cousin to watch the kids, but he took off with the money.
Williams was arrested on Thursday, April 11. She appeared in court Friday where she received a $25,000 bond. On Monday, a judge upheld the bond decision.
