A Historic Visit to the Sweet Shack

Kevin and I took the short drive last week to historic Downing Street in Hollister to a fun little lunch spot called the Sweet Shack. They specialize in smash burgers, home cut fries, handcrafted and homemade ice cream, and even Italian ice. Wow, they are checking a bunch of boxes of happiness for me right there. I almost needed an extended stay. They have a fun family-friendly atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating, both video games and traditional games to play; a very welcoming vibe.

No priority violations at most Greene Co. kitchens inspected recently

Out of 51 routine inspections, more than 75% of the kitchens the Springfield-Greene County Health Department visited had no priority violations. Across the 39 inspections that had no priority violations, 31 had no violations at all. Issues found during inspections fall into either priority or non-priority violations. Priority violations impact the safety of the food, such as cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat food, improper food temperature and poor personal hygiene and employee health. Multiple priority violations can lead to an establishment being shut down. Non-priority violations alone do not directly affect food safety, such as dirty floors, sticky tabletops or outside trash cans not being covered. Plus, a new doughnut shop opens on West Bypass. 'Filet mignon of chicken' opens first north Springfield location Huey Magoo's has opened its third Springfield location at 731 N. Benton Ave., down the street from Central High School. It is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. This is the first location to open north of Sunshine Street. The free-standing restaurant will feature indoor dining, takeout, curbside pickup, catering and online ordering. Health inspectors put Springfield restaurant on risk control plan

Springfield-Greene County Health Department food inspectors put a Springfield restaurant on a risk control plan after an Oct. 21 inspection, according to reports. Ohana Japanese Steakhouse, 310 W. Battlefield Road, had several ready-to-eat, potentially hazardous food items that were not date marked for the third inspection in a row during an Oct. 21 inspection. The restaurant also had crab rangoon with debris on it and salad dressing and crab rangoon that was held past its 7-day discard date. A risk control plan is implemented when an establishment has three of the same priority violations in a row, in an effort to help a restaurant create "a new habit that keeps the food safe and our customers safe," Eric Marcol, program coordinator for SGCHD's environmental services division, told the Springfield News-Leader in 2023 .
