Illinois officials urge residents to get seasonal vaccines now

The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging Illinois residents to get seasonal flu, COVID-19 and RSV immunizations as respiratory illnesses begin to increase. The recommendation comes as flu shows signs of rising in Illinois, according to a community announcement. IDPH Director Sameer Vohra reinforced the message after receiving annual flu and COVID-19 shots at the Winnebago County Health Department in Rockford. “The message today is simple and clear: the time to get your seasonal immunizations is now,” Vohra said. “Respiratory illnesses like flu, COVID-19, and RSV will only get more prevalent in the weeks ahead. Getting protected now gives you the best chance of avoiding illness at the holidays and through the long winter months ahead. And it not only protect you, it also protect your family, your co-workers, and your community.” Illinois is experiencing low levels of respiratory illness activity, but flu is showing signs of increasing, according to IDPH's Seasonal Respiratory Illness Dashboard . Acute respiratory illnesses historically increase substantially during winter as people spend more time indoors, according to the announcement.
