Hoover woman charged with filing false police report after claiming nephew shot at her

HOOVER, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A Hoover woman is charged with filing a false police report after telling authorities that her nephew shot at her during an argument.

According to the Hoover Police Department, the Hoover 911 center received a call from a residence in the 400 block of Crowne Woods Drive at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The caller, 51-year-old Joni V. Langford Green, reported an altercation in the parking lot with her nephew, who she said was a police officer employed by the City of Birmingham.

When HPD arrived, Green told officers her nephew had shot at her during an altercation that had occurred inside the residence just before she called 911.

A bullet impact inside the apartment was discovered and the man at the scene was detained. He was placed on a 48-hour hold in the Hoover City Jail while the claims made against him were investigated.

It was later discovered that the man had accidentally discharged a firearm several days prior while he was cleaning it, resulting in minor property damage. No one was hurt and the incident was not reported to Hoover Police.

While there had been an argument on the night of the 911 call, Green falsely reported the accidental gunshot as part of the argument. The investigation indicated that ongoing domestic issues within the family led to the events.

No probable cause was found to charge the man with a criminal act and he was released from custody.

Green was charged with falsely reporting an incident. She was booked into the Hoover City Jail on Friday and held on a $500 bond.
