Popular lobster pop food truck won't return to NC State Fair over new vendor fees
They’ve had lobster lollipops, giant shrimp, king crab legs and swordfish bites on a stick, all coated with bright lemon pepper and glistening butter. But not this year. Oak City Fish & Chips won’t be pushing its seafood skewers at the 2026 North Carolina State Fair, sitting out for the first time in six years. Oak City developed a reputation as one of the most decadent fair food vendors , serving luxury seafood on a stick. One year, its crab leg skewer cost as much as $76 and sales could total more than $200,000 over 10 days. But Oak City is skipping the 2026 NC State Fair in response to vendor changes that could see them paying tens of thousands of dollars more in fees. Oak City co-owner Isaac Horton said the vendor changes coupled with a rising economy could dampen sales at this year’s fair as customers face higher prices.

Chicken Mull Festival returns to Bear Grass on Oct. 24
As America celebrates 250 years this year, Bear Grass is gearing up for their upcoming 13th annual Chicken Mull Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 24 in downtown Bear Grass. The event will feature music, antique cars, an art show and, of course, chicken mull prepared by the Bear Grass Fire Department. Chicken mull is parboiled chicken, broth, and black and red pepper, and many add a splash of hot sauce, according to chickenmullfestival.com. “Pair a pot of mull with a sleeve of crackers and dinner is ready.” The dish has been around for a while in rural eastern North Carolina, cooked in large vats over a fire. Folks in Bear Grass decided to dedicate a festival to one of its most delectable culinary dishes in 2014. They insist theirs is the original — likely born of necessity during the Great Depression as a way to make a pot of chicken go a long way. The festival has reached thousands of people over the 13 years — and introduced many to the culinary experience of eating mull with a plastic fork out of a Styrofoam cup. For some, it’s the best way to eat it. “The goal of
