HONOLULU (KHON2) — The City’s Emergency Operations Center remains activated due to the severe weather, officials are asking residents to remain vigilant as the rain is expected to linger.

The City and State crews worked around the clock from Kakaako to Nimitz Highway, the flooded streets halted traffic, but the City’s Emergency Management Director Hiro Toiya said they have been able to stay on top of it.

Toiya said, “Little landslides and trees going down along highways that’s been causing some small problems but nothing major so far.”

But the rain has caused people to change their plans, the Honolulu Zoo experienced ponding throughout the property. The Diamondhead State Monument closed due to rockslides and flooding on the trail.

Essie Graham and her family visiting from Florida were caught by surprise.

Graham said, “It’s a bummer but we’re rescheduling we’re definitely going to be back out here Sunday.”

Hawaiian Airlines canceled six neighbor island flights in anticipation of poor weather conditions, a spokesperson said they were able to accommodate affected guests on other flights.

Southwest Airlines confirmed they also experienced delays due to the rain.

The City’s EOC will remain activated until the weather threat passes.

Toiya said, “Still a lot of moisture out there and still some potential for rain so we will see how this plays out.”
