Former University of Hawaii legend and Roosevelt alumnus Chad Owens has been elected to the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame.

Owens played nine seasons in the CFL. He played one season each for the Montreal Alouettes, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders, but the biggest mark he made was during his six seasons with the Toronto Argonauts.

In Toronto, Owens became the first player in league history to surpass 3,000 all-purpose yards in consecutive seasons.

In 2012, Owens won a Grey Cup with the Argonauts and was also named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player.

Other Owens accolades include four All-Star selections and two top special teams player awards.

The 2024 CFL Hall of Fame enshrinement will take place in Hamilton on Sept. 13.

“When you’re playing, when you’re on the come up, you’re not thinking about Hall of Fame,” Owens told KHON2 sports director Rob DeMello. “You think about that next touchdown, you’re trying to score the next play or how much more yardage can you gain? What can you do in the offseason to get better? So, you kind of in that day to day, you don’t think about this. … I was just speechless. Tears and it confirmed that man, you did it.

“All that hard work you put in, all the sacrifice, the perseverance, the injuries, everything was worth it. There’s too many people to thank. There’s too many people that that helped make this possible, that created real life changing impacts on me throughout my journey. There is a lot of people that should feel as if they’re being inducted with me because there’s no way that I could have done it by myself.”
