City says this summer will be hotter than normal, encouraging residents to take action

HONOLULU (KHON2) — As Hawaii kicks off Wildfire Awareness Month, Mayor Rick Blangiardi and first responders are encouraging communities to take action on wildfire risks.

In a bid to raise awareness, Mayor Rick Blangiardi, proclaimed Saturday, May 4, as Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, aligning with the national campaign aimed at bolstering community resilience against wildfires.

“Hawaii is not immune to wildfires and we all know the destruction they can cause however, through education and action we can create a safer community and more resilient community,” said Honolulu Fire Department Battalion Chief J.C. Bisch. “Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is not just a day to raise awareness it’s a day of action.”

In addition to the recent wildfires in Maui that have served as a stark reminder of the imminent threat posed by wildfires, city officials also highlighted that this summer will be drier and hotter than normal.

HFD said residents can stay vigilant by doing some of the following:

• Clearing a 30-foot defensible space around your home
• Ensuring your gutters are clear of leaves and debris
• Ensuring fire lanes and access points are obstruction-free
