    Big Island experiences increase in earthquakes, but it’s not Kīlauea

    HONOLULU (KHON2) — According to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park social media, the Big Island is seeing a sharp increase in earthquakes below the Upper East Rift Zone and Kīlauea summit.

    Officials confirmed that Kīlauea is not erupting, but due to the strong seismic activity, some temporary closures were put in place.

    Reports said Hilina Pali Rd. will be closed from Chain of Craters Rd. The coastal backcountry is temporarily closed for overnight use but are accessible in the daytime. Overnight camping is also suspended at Nāpau and Pepeiao Cabin.
