Man Killed By Moose While Attempting To Take Photos Of Calves

A man was reportedly killed by a moose while attempting to take photos of two newborn moose calves. The Alaska Department of Public Safety officials said the incident occurred on Sunday in Homer, Alaska.

Dale Chorman,70, and another man were searching for the moose in the brush when the mother moose suddenly attacked. According to the Associated Press, spokesperson Austin McDaniel said the animal recently gave birth in the area, and the attack happened as Chorman and his friend were leaving. Although the second individual was not injured in the incident, he did not witness the attack, leaving authorities unsure if Chorman was killed by kicking, stomping, or a combination of both.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the mother moose subsequently left the area. The outlet also reported that Alaska is home to up to 200,000 moose and has a human population of approximately 737,000. Generally, moose are not aggressive unless provoked, and cow moose(female moose) are very protective of their young calves and can become aggressive if they perceive a threat.

A similar incident occurred in 1995 when a 71-year-old man was stomped to death by a moose on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. Witnesses said that students had been harassing the moose and calf leading up to the tragic event.

The state Department of Fish and Game advises to give moose extra space during calving season to avoid similar incidents. McDaniel also emphasized the importance of not starling moose or coming between a mother and her calves. He stated that moose will act unpredictably and go to extreme lengths to protect their young. A small adult female moose can weigh up to 800 pounds, while a large adult male can weigh twice as much.
