Georgia requires less basic training for new police officers than any state but Hawaii
COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia requires fewer hours of basic training for law enforcement officers than any state but Hawaii. With this training, new officers enter unpredictable and dangerous situations where they must make quick decisions under stress. Even though they had more than five years on the Columbus police force, that’s what Officer Michael Aguilar and his partner faced in the pre-dawn hours of Jan. 9, 2017. Hector Arreola, 30, had called police twice after 3:40 a.m., fearing he was being followed and his mother was in danger. When Aguilar and Officer Brian Dudley showed up at Arreola’s mother’s house to check on her safety, they found him outside. Aguilar thought Arreola might be having a mental health crisis and called emergency medical services. He tried to reassure Arreola. When Arreola ran into a neighbor’s yard, the officers gave him space.

The next storm system makes its way into the Valley late week; expect scattered showers and storms Friday and into Saturday. We will continue to fine tune the timing and coverage here as this next system approaches the area. Rain Continues Tuesday, but Drier Conditions Return Wednesday
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - It was an overcast and rainy day across the Valley with temperatures struggling to reach the upper-60s this afternoon. The strong storms stayed to areas south of the Valley, essentially containing the energy for storms to work with along the Gulf Coast, decreasing the Valley’s severe risk. Tonight, there will not be a big temperature change, with temperatures looking to fall into the low- to mid-60s thanks to the rain and clouds. Overnight expect cloudy skies with scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder overnight. Tuesday will start on the soggy side before there is a break in activity in the mid-morning through lunch time hours, before scattered showers and storms return in the afternoon and evening. Some of the showers and storms Tuesday afternoon/evening have the potential to be on the stronger side, with some isolated gusty winds. The front will push through the Valley Tuesday overnight leaving behind drier conditions and warmer temperatures Wednesday and Thursday. The next system will bring rain and storms into the Valley on Friday and linger into the weekend, but we will continue to fine tune the timing and coverage here over the coming days!
