Pfc. Fred Plumlee, of Columbus, was one of thousands of servicemen who died on D-Day. “Everything in this world today and how the modern world is organized, I think, arguably can be drawn to that one day," says the head of the American Battle Monuments Commission.
Memorial Day in the Valley
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - It was a great day for any outdoor plans across the Valley thanks to the sunshine and warm temperatures in the upper-80s to low-90s. Tonight across the Valley expect mostly clear skies early before some clouds begin to move back into the area overnight, on a warm and muggy night. Temperatures waking up Monday morning look to start in the low-70s before reaching the mid- to upper-80s in the afternoon. Memorial Day rain coverage looks to sit between 40-50% but the good news is that we don’t expect it to be a complete washout of the day. Monday morning a few passing isolated showers/storms can’t be ruled out, but overall expect a chance of rain and storms in the afternoon and evening; some of the showers and storms in the afternoon could be on the stronger side producing some gusty winds. We will continue to keep you updated on the rain coverage and timing on the WTVM Weather app, as many may have outdoor plans for Memorial Day. The front will finally push through late Monday, leaving behind drier conditions Tuesday into early next weekend with rain coverage between 0-20%. Temperatures Tuesday look to range from the upper-80s to the low-90s before returning to near seasonable in the mid- to upper-80s Wednesday through Saturday.

As parties swing right and left, the middle gets less comfortable
Georgia’s political parties continue to drift in opposite directions, making the middle an increasingly uncomfortable place for both Republicans and Democrats. At its annual convention in Columbus earlier this month, the Georgia Republican Party continued its warm embrace of Donald Trump. Conservative activist Amy Kremer defeated Ginger Howard for one of the national committee spots, charging that Howard didn’t do enough to help Trump in the 2020 election. Incumbent committeeman Jason Thompson hung on to his seat in a runoff. He was attacked because his wife and daughter work for — are you ready? — Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
