Great Bend EMS still monitoring increase in call load
The Great Bend Fire Department and EMS reported a nearly 33% increase in incident calls this past January compared to last year. At Monday’s Great Bend City Council meeting, Fire Chief Brent Smith said his department is currently up 22% as of early May. The majority of the call increase is coming from medical incidents.
Barton Commission approves Youth Crew trip to Chicago
One of the final decisions the Barton County Commission made in its stay at the former JC Penny building in Great Bend was a fun one. Six Barton County Youth Crew members attended the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America (CADCA) Youth Conference near Dallas last year. Tuesday morning, Juvenile Services Prevention Advocate Tyler Morton sought approval to take eight members to this year's conference in Chicago on July 15-18.

Behr bombs, Post double help Lady Panthers punch ticket to state

Twice Tuesday evening at the Sports Complex, the Lady Panther softball team finished out tough games to punch their ticket to state for the first time since 2015. Freshman Camdyn Post provided the walk-off hit in a 4-3 regional semifinal win against Newton. Freshman Kya Behr hit her second 3-run homer in the regional championship to help Great Bend defeat Goddard 5-3.

USD 428 board approves new R.I.S.E. program at Park Elementary

Questions mount as search for missing Great Bend mother, baby continues
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - We continue to ask questions as Great Bend police continue to search for a missing mother and her baby. The two were reported missing on Sunday, May 5. This week, FactFinder investigator Branden Stitt contacted Great Bend police for an update on the case. Detectives say they’ve been in contact with family and friends of 32-year-old Crystal DeMoss as the investigation into where the mother and her baby boy could be, intensifies. May proclaimed as Mental Health Awareness Month in Barton Co.
Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting was another busy one for proclamations. The board honored the work of Central Kansas Debriefing for its work of providing mental health access for first responders. The board also heard from Vicki Richardson, Central Kansas Partnership chair, along with task force members, to proclaim May 12-18 as National Prevention Week. Julie Kramp, executive director at the Center for Counseling and Consultation in Great Bend, said her organization should receive notification soon that it is now a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC).

Great Bend High School bids farewell to 209 seniors in Class of '24
Of course, the rain held off from 5-6 p.m. Sunday evening in Great Bend. But a forecast of thunderstorms likely moving into the area around the time of Great Bend High School’s 137th Annual Commencement forced USD 428 officials to move the ceremony indoors for the first time in 26 years. Two hundred and nine seniors crossed the stage in front of a packed GBHS gymnasium, with spillover into the school’s auditorium where the event was live-streamed. Many area schools often hold their graduations on Mother’s Day. Class of 2024 Salutatorian Emilee Hall took note that it was Great Bend’s turn.
