West End-Sardis shows we still need rivalries in high school football | Donaldson
WALNUT GROVE — It wasn't hard to see how much a game not played for 17 years still mattered to West End football on Friday night. The west Etowah County rivalry between the Patriots and Sardis has been off the schedule since 2009 but was brought back this offseason as both coaches saw the importance of getting a game like this back on to the schedule. After a runaway second half, West End sealed the game with late defensive stands with three turnovers and a blocked punt in the final 15 minutes. The strong defensive showing, paired with three touchdowns from Brodi Mass, propelled the Patriots to a 34-12 win over their rivals. Which leaves one more question on the table. Why did it take so long to get this game back on the schedule? As the final buzzer, not much else mattered to the West End faithful that has stuck by its team during a rough stretch over the past few seasons. The players were hugging and jumping for joy and fans, many who played in the rivalry for the Patriots, now got to watch their sons celebrate a win over the Lions like they used to do. "To
