21-year-old man shot and killed in Hoboken's first murder case since 2022

Tensions are high as Hoboken police patrol near the scene where a young man was fatally shot over the weekend.

21-year-old Damon Murray was a former star athlete in high school and Rutgers University football player. Murray was shot in one of Hoboken's housing authority locations on Sunday night.

His death marks Hoboken's first murder case in nearly two years.

People say Murray was very involved in sports in the community.

"He was great kid, a good role model, hard worker. He's going to be missed," neighbor Eboné Thomas said.

The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. and prompted a big police response. The victim was rushed to the hospital in a private car, but later died.

The mayor of Hoboken sent out a message on X on Monday afternoon remembering the victim.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Damon Murray, a well-respected, standout athlete who gave back to Hoboken youth and our community at large," said Mayor Ravinder Bhalla in his message.

Murray's family lives close to the homicide scene.

The Hudson County Prosecutors Office is leading the investigation, but so far has not released a motive for the crime.

The last homicide in Hoboken was September 25, 2022 .
