Heavy rain can’t counteract longstanding drought problems at TVA lakes

Heavy rainfall across East Tennessee on July 12 wasn’t enough to counteract a drought that has made it tough for the Tennessee Valley Authority to get many of its lakes to traditional summer levels. The utility manages 49 dams and reservoirs across its seven-state service region, with lakes serving as major tourism draws in their respective communities. TVA manages water levels throughout the year to account for both recreation and flood control, but months of trouble from Mother Nature have made it hard for TVA to hit water level targets. TVA spokesperson Scott Brooks told Knox News recent heavy rainfall in Knox and Cocke counties “doesn't help the system much when we are several feet below normal pool on big reservoirs.” Some of the utility’s waterways also are used in power generation, and all the factors come together to determine water levels. “The Douglas watershed received the heaviest rainfall through this event,” Brooks said. “Douglas elevation has increased about 2 feet and will see the reservoir rise a little more over the next few days.” TVA warned earlier this summer that boaters should be careful because of low water levels. Months of drought and a consequent lack of runoff were

Ashe County remains in severe drought

RALEIGH — Localized heavier rainfall in parts of North Carolina may help alleviate demand for water for irrigation or other uses but did not lead to substantial improvements in the state’s drought conditions. According to the classifications released by the North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council on Thursday, nine counties around the Triangle and eastern Triad remain in exceptional drought, the highest drought classification. Brunswick County is also classified as experiencing exceptional drought. Another 46 counties are in extreme drought, 31 counties are in severe drought and 14 counties are in moderate drought. Watauga, Ashe and Avery counties are all listed as being in a severe drought, with part of Ashe County is extreme drought. “Parts of the Triangle saw more than 4 inches of rain or more this past week, but to substantially improve our drinking water supplies, it has to rain upstream of the reservoirs,” said Linwood Peele, supervisor of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Water Resources Water Supply Planning Branch. “It matters where the rain falls, and how fast it falls. The rain helped conditions here, but we need the lakes and reservoirs to fill back up, the groundwater and aquifers replenished and
