Where a Juvenile Hall Once Stood, Area 1 Candidates Make Their Case
On October 10, I went to Farber Educational Campus with a recorder in my handbag and a bit of election season cynicism. Many election forums can seem similar. This location is far from typical. Farber, Fresno Unified’s roughly $65 million alternative education campus, sits on the former Fresno County Juvenile Hall, which closed in 2006 and was torn down in 2019. Walking in, I felt that this space had not yet completely forgotten its past. Somewhere under the brand-new paint and career pathway banners this old land still seemed to be listening, wondering what the grownups would say about kids now. On the other hand, I also saw a monument to progress. Ever since I was a teenager, I have advocated against the school-to-prison pipeline, and this was a visceral representation of my goals, especially since the demolition lined up with my own senior year of high school.

What councilmembers think of changes to Fresno's Tower District. ‘Learning in real time'
Councilmembers Annalisa Perea and Miguel Arias are sharing their thoughts on the new changes that rolled out in Fresno’s Tower District last week — particularly the increased police presence and how the “vendor market zone” is going so far. Late last weekend, The Bee visited the zone — located in a vacant parking lot at Olive and Van Ness avenues. There were four vendors and a minimal amount of people in the parking lot. Vendors expressed that their sales were negatively impacted by the city council’s decision to restrict food trucks and sidewalk vendors to the lot Thursday through Sunday. In addition to the lack of activity at the vendor zone, there were large groups of police officers throughout Tower. The Bee shared photos and videos from the Tower District with Perea and Arias, who represent portions of the neighborhood, and requested their thoughts. During a phone call Tuesday afternoon, Perea told The Bee that the increased police presence is largely focused in front of specific clubs with those businesses’ support. “The reason the community is seeing a denser presence of cops — particularly in front of Bobby’s and Vibez and MIA — is because those respective businesses are funding
