The Carroll County Art Show sparked a “Mother’s Day Card Project” and both became magical events where the talent of the county’s youth was shared with everyone. The Carroll County Creative Arts and Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home Foundation wish to thank the Blue Unicorn, Dr. and Mrs. Ken Williams, The Friends of the Blue Ridge, and Mr. Cary Simms for their financial support for the winners of this year’s Spring Art show.

The high school winner received a $200 check, the middle school winner received a $100 check and each elementary school winner received a $25 check. From the CCCA a special thank-you to the judges, Mrs. Connie Williams from the Blue Unicorn and Mr. Scot Mauldin from the Blue Ridge Arts Center. Both judges spoke of the many talented students in the show and the influence of their teachers. There were some fantastic art projects in the show.

Sarah Skelton is this year’s high school winner and the middle school winner is Maxwell Montagna. Each Elementary grade level also received a winning prize: Fifth grade was won by Jenna Bowman, Hayden Lineberry was the fourth grade winner, Third grade was won by Pyper Smith, the second grade winner is Ava Caudill, First grade was won by Josephine Wright and the kindergarten winner was Eden Nester.

The high school and middle school winners will have their art work on display at the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home until Christmas. There are five Honorable Mentions this year: McKaela Gallimore, Jimmy Alvarado, Zacharia Haynes, Adam Phillips, Sabrina Boutebia, Ethan Avrio and Lilian Quesenberry.

This year the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home Foundation invited the county’s sixth graders to write a special note to the mother figure in their lives. In today’s world not all children get to grow up with their biological parents, which is why they got to write about who is the important “mother figure” and to recognize Mother’s Day. They did an absolutely outstanding Job.

Fifteen of those sixth grade students who participated in the “Mother’s Day Card Project” and the Spring Art Show CCCA winners, along with their families and teachers, were invited to a reception and tour of the historical home in Hillsville on May 5. The tour started at 2 p.m. and the reception and award ceremony followed.

The Carroll County Creative Arts has in its mission statement to foster and develop places for students to experience the arts to be created and appreciated. The arts are in everything in our lives from the food we eat to the music in which we listen; the plays, movies and TV shows we watch and even the cover that keeps us warm at night. There is art in the way we express ourselves and in our literature. Art is in the design of the machines that help make our lives easier, the clothes we wear, the way we style our hair and even how we put on make-up.

The Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Foundation has dedicated the ground floor for artistic development. This area historically was the business level of the historic home. It now is home to The Gallery displaying local artisans of various mediums and classrooms for all ages and levels (beginners to professionals) of the public. Tours of the home are available the first weekend of every month through the beginning of the holiday season. The Gallery is open during the summer months every Thursday & Friday (11 a.m.-4 p.m.), and Saturday (10 a.m.-2 p.m.). You are invited to visit and view the student’s work.
