Record Rainfall Hits Northwest get ready for 80 degrees this week

This past weekend, the Northwest experienced a deluge of rainfall, providing much-needed relief to the region. Rainfall totals were impressive, particularly on Sunday, with Pendleton soaking up 1.81 inches, Walla Walla seeing over an inch and a half, and Hermiston receiving just under the same amount. Even the Tri-Cities, which typically sees less precipitation, recorded over half an inch, marking a significant event as the last time such rainfall occurred in a single day was back in November 2022.

However, not all areas received equal shares of the downpour. Yakima was notably drier, missing out with less than 2/10 of an inch of rainfall. Despite this, most locations, excluding Yakima, broke daily rainfall records for May 5th.

As we transition into the new week, the weather pattern is shifting. This morning, we're greeted with drier conditions and even some sunshine in certain areas. However, winds are picking up, with temperatures ranging from the brisk 30s in Yakima to the milder 40s in the rest of our regions. Tri-Cities is sitting just under 50 degrees. Sustained winds between 20 and 30 mph are expected, with gusts potentially reaching up to 35 or even 40 mph.

Looking at the radar, the weekend's busy weather has quieted down. Yet, a second system moving in from the northwest will keep showers in the forecast for today, especially along the foothills of the Blues and across Northeast Oregon. Tomorrow promises a drying trend as this system moves to the east.

Wednesday marks the beginning of a pattern change, with high pressure building in from the coast. This change sets the stage for a warmup, starting mid-week and intensifying into the weekend. By Friday, temperatures are expected to soar into the 80s, making for what could be a hot weekend ahead.

Here's a breakdown of what to expect going forward:

    • Today: Expect scattered showers, particularly in Walla Walla, Pendleton, and Hermiston, with highs in the mid-60s. Winds will be a significant factor, so brace for a blustery day.
    • Tonight: Showers will gradually diminish, but snowfall will increase in higher elevations. Temperatures will dip into the upper 30s and lower 40s.
    • Tomorrow: A breezy day with lingering showers in some areas, but the Tri-Cities will begin to dry out, setting the stage for a warmer trend.
    • Wednesday onwards: Temperatures will steadily climb, reaching the 80s by the weekend. Expect dry and sunny conditions, with only a slight chance of showers in some areas.

In summary, after a weekend of record-breaking rainfall, the Northwest is set to transition into a warmer and drier pattern, bringing relief to some and a taste of summer to others. Stay tuned for further updates as we move through the week.

Stay dry and safe out there!
