Helena girls win sectional, Spain Park, Briarwood boys finish runner-up as county golfers qualify for sub-state

The best golfers in Shelby County put on some of their best performances of the season at the sectional championships and will now get to continue their seasons at sub-state.

The Helena Huskies, Spain Park Jaguars, Briarwood Christian Lions, Oak Mountain Eagles, Pelham Panthers Westminster at Oak Mountain Knights and Indian Springs will all be represented at sub-state as they compete for a shot at a state championship.

Helena’s girls golf team put together a big day and took the Class 6A, Section 2 championship at Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa.

The Huskies shot a score of 257 to finish 13 strokes ahead of Northridge and claim the title.

Aby Cerwick led the way for Helena as she won the individual section championship with a score of 77. Ana Cruce Johnson came in sixth with a score of 89, Annie Mure earned ninth place by shooting 91 and Lily Kate Mure was 11th with a 92.

In addition, a pair of Briarwood golfers qualified as individuals as Camille Beatty came in third with a 78 and Cariann Beatty finished in fourth with an 83.

In the boys sectional, Briarwood came in second place with a score of 306 and Helena finished third with a score of 343.

Briarwood’s Sam Burns walked away from the sectional as the individual winner with a score of 72. Elsewhere for the Lions, Nathan Barnes came in fifth place with a 75, Will Burns earned 10th place with a 78 and Will Schroeder came in 12th with an 82.

Kaden Parramore of Pelham earned a sub-state spot as an individual qualifier with his 11th-place score of 80.

Over in Class 7A, Spain Park’s boys golf team finished in second place at the Class 7A, Section 3 championship with a score of 282 at Old Overton Golf Course to qualify as a team for sub-state.

The Jags were one of just three teams to finish the day under par as they shot 2-under-par between Ian Norman, Chase Kyes, Davis Gurley and Luke Ballintine.

Norman came in fourth with a score of 68, Chase Kyes tied for fifth with a score of 69, Gurley finished tenth with a 72 and Ballintine shot a 73 to come in 11th place. In addition, Wes Sauceda earned 13th place with his 76th but was not included in the team score.

Norman shot six birdies on the day, including three in four holes from the seventh through tenth holes. Kyes shot four birdies in his 2-under-par score, and Gurley eagled the par-four sixth hold.

Other county results in the sectional included Oak Mountain in fifth place, Chelsea in sixth and Thompson in seventh place.

In the Class 7A, Section 3 championship for girls golf, Oak Mountain finished in second with a score of 233 as the Eagles had a big day at Highland Park Golf Course.

Katie Nickles of Oak Mountain tied for the individual championship with a score of 73. In addition for the Eagles, Reese Powell finished in sixth with a score of 78 and Elise Mullins came in ninth with a score of 82.

Spain Park had a pair of individual qualifiers as Courney Johnson and Emma Fortier tied for fourth with a score of 77.

Westminster at Oak Mountain’s Asher Franklin took home a big honor as he won the Class 1A/2A, Section 2 championship at Highland Park Golf Course with a score of 73. As a result, he was an individual qualifier for sub-state.

Henry Wilder of Indian Springs qualified for sub-state after he finished 15th in the Class 3A, Section 2 championship at Arrowhead Country Club with a score of 89.
