Reno High sophomore QB puts name in school record book
He’s a sophomore in his first full season on the varsity squad, but Trevor Martinelli already has his name in the school record book. Martinelli has helped Huskies football go undefeated in the Class 4A-North as they prepare for the regional playoffs. Reno hosts North Valleys on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Last week, the Huskies beat the Panthers, 37-0, as Martinelli broke the school record for passing touchdowns in a season. He has 23 TD passes so far, breaking the single-season mark set last year by Braylon Wilson, now playing on the Drake University football team. Martinelli joins senior Jackson Mathews in the Reno High record books this season. Mathews broke the school career record for rushing yards. He now has 2,510 yards rushing so far in his career. Martinelli has completed 120 of 193 passes this season for 1,471 yards and 23 touchdowns against seven interceptions. Wilson had 22 passing TDs in each of his junior and senior seasons, along with one as a sophomore. His 45 touchdowns is the school career record. Key high school football game Friday features top two kickers
As high school football teams continue to jostle for playoff seeding, there’s an added feature to this week’s Bishop Manogue at Spanish Springs game. The two top kickers in the Class 5A-North will be facing off, Bishop Manogue’s Ryder Scarlett and Spanish Springs’ Kristian Andrus-Flores. The Cougars and Miners have battled for Class 5A-North supremacy the past several years, with the Cougars winning the Regional and State championships last season. Both Andrus-Flores and Scarlett played soccer before moving over to football, which could help explain their success. Scarlett has committed to play football for UNLV next season and Andrus-Flores, who also plays defensive back, is still weighing his college offers. He visited Idaho earlier this month and is planning to visit Montana Tech. Andrus-Flores honed his craft from former Nevada kicker Brandon Talton, who ran camps around Northern Nevada before moving to Texas. He also attended a camp put on by former NFL kicker Matt Prater. He said consistency is the key to being a good kicker. “It’s just you, the holder and snapper, and you guys are a team,” Andrus-Flores said. “If you get in your own head about it, it makes a difference. You’re calm. At DB (defensive
