Busy Veterans Parkway intersection to get new traffic light — someday
A Veterans Parkway intersection that has raised safety concerns among neighboring residents will be getting a new traffic light. The intersection of Veterans Parkway with Cesena Avenue and Pesaro Way has been the subject of complaints from residents since the Southeast Connector opened in July 2018. The opening of the highway, an alternate connection between south Reno and east Sparks that bypasses Interstate 80 and 580, has led to increased traffic at the intersection. It's especially difficult for motorists to turn left across Veterans Parkway from either Cesena Avenue or Pesaro Way during busy periods. The four-way intersection only has two stop signs on Cesena and Pesaro while cars on Veterans Parkway can travel at full speed. Initially, the city of Reno and Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County proposed constructing a concrete median in the middle of the intersection as a “cost-effective” solution to restrict left turns. Residents, however, complained that a median would hamper access. It meant someone coming from Cesena, for example, had to make a right turn first, then a U-turn at the next traffic light to head south toward Mount Rose Highway and South Virginia. Someone coming from Pesaro would also need to turn right
