    Canes track squads compete in three meets

    The Hayward Hurricanes track and field team competed in the Knights of Columbus Relays at UW-La Crosse Veterans Memorial Stadium Saturday April 27. The HHS girls placed second out of 16 teams and the boys placed sixth out of 17 teams.

    Top finishers for the Canes were:

    Girls

    First places: 4 X 400-meter relay (Avery Poppe, Lydia Bergschneider, Brianna Hexum, Harper Sheehan), 4:09.35; Avery Poppe, high jump, 5-2; Harper Sheehan, 1,600m run, 5:31.65.

    Second places: Harper Sheehan, 200m dash, 27.08; Lola Olsen, 3,200m run, 2:43.52; 4,000-meter distance medley (Lola Olsen, Greta Schmitt, Maria Halberg Lydia Bergschneider), 13:56.47.

    Fourth place: Avery Poppe, 400m dash, 1:02.04.

    Fifth places: Avery Poppe, 200m dash, 27.54; 4 X 200m relay (Natalie Grubbs, Maria Halberg, Greta Schmitt, Danika Kortendick), 1:52.97; 4 X 100m relay (Alivia Poppe, Melody Isham, Emma Beilke, Natalie Grubbs), 53.48.

    Boys

    Second places: Ben Laird, 1,600m run, 4:33.51, and 800m run, 1:58.96; Lucas Hansen, 300m hurdles, 41.59.

    Third place: Bradey Gottwald, discus throw, 143-2.

    Fifth places: 4,000-meter distance medley (Evan McConnell, Austin Ewert, Aiden Susedik, Seth Becker), 11:44.27; Evan McConnell, 3,200m run, 10:15.07; Lucas Hansen, long jump, 20-5.50.

    Osceola invitational

    On Tuesday April 23, the Hurricane boys placed fourth and the girls placed fifth at the eight-school Osceola Invitational. The meet included several Division One schools.

    Boys team scores: Hudson, 184; Osceola, 136; Somerset, 100; Hayward, 69; Rice Lake, 68.

    First places: Bradley Young, high jump, 5-8.

    Second places: 4 x 800m relay (Aiden Susedik, Evan McConnell, Alustin Ewert, Ben Laird), 8:39.53.

    Third places: Lucas Hansen, 300m hurdles, 42.33; 4 X 400m relay (Gannon Mohr, Cade Schlapper, Ben Laird, Evan McConnell), 3:37.55.

    Fourth places: Ben Laird, 800m run, 2:03.34; Evan McConnell, 3,200m run, 10:29.27; Bradey Gottwald, shot put, 43-2.5; 4 X 200m relay (Brock Chucka, Alex DePew, Gannon Mohr, Lucas Hansen) 1:39.68; 4 X 100m relay (Logan Poppe, Brock Chucka, Viktor Enk, Anthony Aranda), 47.23.

    Sixth places: Cade Schlapper, 400m dash, 56.06; Seth Becker, 3,200m run, 10:57.74; Lucas Hansen, 110m hurdles, 17.28; Lucas Hansen, long jump, 18-4.5.

    Girls team scores: Chisago Lakes, Minnesota, 149.50; Hudson, 125; Osceola, 118; Rice Lake, 95.50; Hayward 90.50.

    First places: Harper Sheehan, 200m dash, 27.61; Lydia Bergschneider, 800m run, 2:30.54

    Second places: 4 X 200m relay (Natalie Grubbs, Maria Halberg, Brianna Hexum, Danika Kortendick), 1:53.87.

    Third places: Harper Sheehan, 400m dash, 1:00.50; Danika Kortendick, 100m hurdles, 18.27; 4 X 400m relay (Greta Schmitt, Lydia Bergschneider, Maria Halberg, Avery Poppe), 4:21.68; Hailey Waystedt, pole vault, 8-0.Fourth places: Harper Sheehan, 100m dash, 13.49.

    Fifth places: Avery Poppe, 300m hurdles, 49.11;4 X 800m relay (Alyson Reier, Macey Reier, Greta Maki, Ava Pettibone), 11:20.93.

    Sixth places: Brianna Hexum, 100m hurdles, 18.76; Avery Poppe, high jump, 5-0; 4 X 100m relay (Danielle Mattson, Melody Isham, Emma Beilke, Alivia Poppe), 56.12.

    Cumberland meet

    On Thursday April 25, the Hurricane tracksters competed in the Cumberland Invitational. Both the girls and boys teams placed fifth.

    Top finishers for the Canes were:

    Girls second places: Macie Mavis, 100m dash, 13.95; Helen Thompson, high jump, 5-0; Hailey Waystedt, pole vault, 8-6.

    Boys second places: Logan Poppe, pole vault, 10-0.

    Boys fourth places: Bradyn Keller, 1,600m run, 5:18.77, and 800m run, 2:22.58; Derrick Breezee, high jump, 5-4.

    Girls fourth places: Helen Thompson, 400m dash, 1:07.05;

    Girls fifth places: Greta Maki, 1,600m run, 7:07.19.

    Boys fifth places: Logan Poppe, 200m dash, 25.51; Theodore Winter, pole vault, 8-6; Wyatt Lobitz, triple jump, 33-8.5.

    Girls sixth places: Helen Thompson, 200m dash, 29.4.
