Spring election to feature local races, presidential primary

The spring general election will be held Tuesday April 2 in Sawyer County and throughout Wisconsin, as voters will have the chance to cast ballots for local school boards, their county board of supervisors, town, village and city officers.

There will be a presidential preference primary election in Wisconsin and two proposed amendments to the state constitution.

Local polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Five persons including two incumbents are running for three open positions on the Hayward Community Schools Board of Education:

The persons running for election are incumbents Stacey Hessel and Derek Hand, plus new candidates Tracy Lynn, Kraig Gay and Amy Sportel. ‘They were profiled in last week’s Sawyer County Record.

County board

All 15 Sawyer County Board of Supervisors positions are up for election on April 2. The candidates are:

District One: Steve Kariainen is running to replace incumbent Dale Schleeter, who filed a notice of non-candidacy.

District Two: The candidates are incumbent Kay Wilson and Dan Palmer.

District Three: The candidates are incumbent Tweed Shuman and Brenda Dettloff.

District Four: Incumbent Stacey Hessel is unopposed.

District Five: Randy Neumann is running to replace Jason Weaver, who did not file for re-election.

District Six: Incumbent Marc Helwig is running as a registered write-in.

District Seven: Incumbent Thomas W. Duffy is unopposed.

District Eight: Incumbent Marshal Savitski is running unopposed.

District Nine: Incumbent Brian Bisonette is running unopposed.

District 10: Chuck Van Etten is running to replace Michael Maestri, who filed a notice of non-candidacy.

District 11: Incumbent Christopher Rusk faces Jeff Hoehne.

District 12: Incumbent John Righeimer faces Dawn Petit.

District 13: Incumbent Ronald Kinsley is unopposed.

District 14: Incumbent Ron Buckholtz is unopposed.

District 15: John Suralski is running to replace Ed Peters, who filed a notice of non-candidacy.

City council

In the City of Hayward, only the incumbents are running for four positions on the city council. They are Joe Kreyer, District One; Dena Herrmann, District Two; Michael Swan, District Three; and Jim Miller, District Four.

Town boards

Bass Lake:

Two supervisor positions are up for election on April 2. The incumbents, Dave Aubart and Jim Evans, were the only persons filing for the ballot.

Hayward

Three persons are running for two new supervisor positions which were created in accordance with the Town of Hayward’s expansion to a five-person town board. The candidates are Ben Kurtzweil, Carol Williamson and Brenda Dettloff.

Lenroot

Three candidates are running for two supervisor positions in the spring election. They are Jason Sjostrom and Ron Poppe, both incumbents, plus Brett Danielson.

Round Lake

Two supervisor positions are up for election on April 2. The candidates are James Strandlund (incumbent), Donald Stover (incumbent), Marvin Scott Verbeck and Ginny Chabek.

Spider Lake

Three persons are running for two open supervisor positions on the Town of Spider Lake Board on April 2: Quentin Johnson, Deb Amery (incumbent) and Bruce Van Fleet.

Incumbent Lee Seibert filed a notice of noncandidacy.

Constitution amendments

There will be two proposed amendments to the Wisconsin State Constitution on the April 2 ballot:

1) Question 1 reads: “Use of private funds in election administration. Shall section 7 (1) of article III of the constitution be created to provide that private donations and grants may not be applied for, accepted, expended, or used in connection with the conduct of any primary, election, or referendum?”

2) Question 2 would add a new section to Article III of the state constitution that states that no one other than an election official authorized by law may help conduct any election in the state. The ballot question was placed on the ballot with another amendment to the same section that would prohibit any level of government in the state from applying or accepting non-governmental funds or equipment for election administration.
