Medford pool could still be closed for the 2027 season

During Monday’s meeting, the Medford City Council waded into turbulent waters while considering alternate courses of action regarding the Medford pool and sources of recreation next summer for the city’s children. Last month the Medford City Council voted to close the pool for the 2027 season in order to make necessary and long overdue repairs. However, as the council anticipated, the community was more than a little displeased with the decision as some were left wondering why the repairs didn’t begin immediately following the 2026 pool season with others criticizing the manner in which the pool has been maintained and winterized. City Administrator Elizabeth Jackson addressed the criticism, saying that the decision to close the pool was among the most difficult she has had to make in her decade with the city, but that, contrary to public sentiment, the closure will not be permanent. Jackson disputed claims that the city knew that the repairs needed to be made prior to opening for the 2026 season, stating they became aware when the pool staff began noticing significant water loss, which led them to run a hose overnight to avoid running the pool’s pumps dry. “The pool needs to be fixed and

OPC tables request for 2nd Krueger Addition preliminary plat

The Owatonna Planning Commission tabled a request from the city and Jeff Schammel for the vacation of a public right-of-way of Barb Street and a portion of Krueger Street, as well as the preliminary plat of the Krueger second addition during Tuesday’s meeting. The city and Schammel were petitioning to vacate the portion of the public ROW of Krueger and Barb streets in its entirety. The streets were platted with the original Krueger Addition along with lots on both sides of the streets; the city purchased the remaining lots in the Krueger Addition for the construction of a storm water pond. The remainder of the land will be developed. “Once these are vacated, there is another request that would replat and rededicate those right-of-ways as would be used with the proposed development,” Greg Kruschke, the city’s community development manager, said. “Since the pond was constructed here, through the majority of this area, there’s just not a need for this right-of-way in here anymore. … The property is not going to develop as originally envisioned when this property was designed in the ‘80s.” The Community Development Department is proposing the existing easement from the Carriage Homes Development continue with the condition
