Westfield councilors vote $11M athletic fields bond without PFAS restrictions
WESTFIELD — With the 2022 state championship Bombers softball team looking on, the Westfield City Council retook the first of two votes for the $11.1 million athletic fields bond on April 23, passing it 10-2, with councilors Bridget Matthews-Kane and Kristen Mello voting against it. A final vote on the bond will be scheduled for the regular City Council meeting on May 16.

Sorority marks Mental Health Awareness Month with talk focused on Black community
SPRINGFIELD — Black community, take what you’ve been taught about mental health, and shake it up and throw it away, says clinical social worker Sheril Cooley. The month of May marks Mental Health Awareness Month. In recognition, a Black women’s sorority, the Beta Alpha Zeta Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Inc., on Sunday hosted family therapists Dr. Winifred Martin of the Tribe Institute and Andrea St. Louis of the Tatted Professionals, along with the Pioneer Valley Coalition for Suicide Prevention and Families Against Violence, at its monthly luncheon meeting at the Eagles Hall on St. James Avenue.
Protesters interrupt Chancellor Reyes’ inauguration, calling for divestment
Kalina Kornacki and Alexandra Rowe contributed to coverage of the protest. Chancellor Javier Reyes was formally inaugurated on April 26 during a ceremony held inside the Mullins Center. Both inside and outside the arena, the ceremony was interrupted by a coalition of students, faculty and alumni calling for the University’s divestment from Raytheon Technologies (also known as RTX).

The second-to-last regular Senate meeting of the Student Government Association began at 6:33 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 at the Black Box Theater in the Student Union. The FY25 S-1 budget was presented for its consideration next week and a policy recommendation for the inclusion of gender-neutral bathrooms was also introduced.
2024 Global Fest honors many different cultures
Many student organizations came together to celebrate Global Fest and those who attended seemed eager to participate in the activities offered and partake in the refreshments. The event started at 4 p.m., and people slowly trickled in. At the entrance to the Blanchard Hall Great Room, there were drinks and tote bags emblazoned with the words “Global Fest.” A poster projected up front advertised the event, and different clubs were set up at tables all around the Great Room, with people milling about from booth to booth.
