Around the Herd: April 17 to April 23 in Athletics
Over the past weekend, the Amherst baseball team went to Vermont for three games against NESCAC rival, Middlebury College. The Mammoths fell early in the first game, giving up a run in the first inning. Jack Sampedro ’25’s RBI-single down right field answered the score in the third, but the Panthers struck right back to make the score 2-1 at the top of the sixth. From then on, the Mammoths didn’t let them score again, scoring three unanswered runs in the seventh and eight innings, with one of them coming from yet another Sampedro RBI. Amherst won 4-2 for Coach J.P. Pyne’s 300th career victory.
Eliezer Rosario, Central baseball silence Westfield, 4-2
WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School baseball team opened the season with six consecutive wins. On Monday, the Bombers hit their first losing streak of the season. Central senior pitcher Eliezer Rosario scattered four hits, no walks, and two runs, while striking out 14 batters as the Golden Eagles, of Springfield defeated Westfield 4-2 at Bullens Field. It was the Bombers second straight loss.

Minnechaug swept Belchertown on Monday 25-11, 25-16, 25-17. Jonah Rost led the way on offense with 10 kills and three aces to go with seven digs and 1.5 blocks. Andrew Szpakowski had nine kills, three aces, five digs and half a block for the Falcons.

The Massachusetts baseball team rode some momentum into Storrs in a big midweek battle with the UConn Huskies. The lingering effects of its first Atlantic 10 series win of the year did not last as the Minutemen (14-22, 5-7 A-10) could not stop the Huskies (21-18, 7-2 Big East) in a 13-3 rout.
Alger Leads Lenox Past Westfield Tech
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Amaya Alger went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs Wednesday to lead the Lenox softball team to a 15-12 win over Westfield Tech. Evelyn Julieano was 2-for-4 with a pair of walks and scored four runs for the Millionaires, who went up, 13-6, with a six-run rally in the top of the fifth.
